If using the following prescriptions, you should not wax. Stop use of these prescriptions for at least three months preceding waxing. An exception is Accutane; you should be off this medicine for at least one-year preceding waxing.
Use caution
The following items can make your skin progressively more sensitive and vulnerable to lifting and irritation during waxing.
Follow these precautions
These factors are known to make waxing more prone to skin lifting
When to be cautious
Never wax when
The main difference between the two is that strip wax involves using disposable strips to remove the hair, whereas with hot wax, the wax is left to harden and then directly taken off. Strip wax is typically used for larger areas and is much quicker to apply and remove and is generally used on thicker or less sensitive skin, hot wax is considered for more delicate, sensitive areas like bikinis or face or if the skin has had a lot of exposure to retinoids and AHA’s’.
Hot wax can be more expensive and can differ in price to strip wax as hot wax is more expensive and mainly it takes up more treatment time.
The key to successful wax aftercare is preparing your skin before the service. Start by gently exfoliating the area you plan to wax a day or two before your appointment. This can help to remove dead skin cells, making it easier for the wax to grip the hair and reducing the risk of ingrown hairs.
It's also important to avoid using skin irritants like fragranced products, retinoids, and alpha hydroxy acids several days in advance. These can inflame and irritate the skin, making it much more sensitive to waxing.
Some additional do's and don'ts include:
During your waxing session, it's important to relax and be open and honest and share any allergies or sensitivities you have. The more information you share, the better equipped we can be to provide a comfortable waxing experience.
When it comes to post-wax aftercare, there are a few simple things you can do to keep your skin happy, healthy, and irritation-free. Here are a few of our tried-and-true tips.
Cleanse With Care
After waxing, it's crucial to keep the waxed area clean and free from bacteria to prevent infections. Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser to cleanse the area. Avoid harsh soaps, exfoliants, or products with irritating ingredients, as they can further aggravate sensitive skin.
Soothe and Calm the Skin
It's common to experience some redness, irritation, or sensitivity after a Brazilian wax. You can soothe the skin by applying a cold compress or ice pack wrapped in a clean cloth to ease any swelling or discomfort. You can also apply a soothing gel or aloe vera to provide relief. Avoid hot baths and showers for the first 24 to 48 hours after your wax, avoid hot baths, showers, steam rooms, saunas, or any activities that may increase heat and sweat in the waxed area. Heat can cause further irritation and increase the risk of infection. Instead, stick to lukewarm water when cleansing the area.
Moisturize Regularly
Moisturizing the waxed area is crucial to keep the skin hydrated and prevent dryness or itchiness. Choose a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer and apply it daily to the waxed area. Look for moisturizers that contain soothing ingredients like chamomile, tea tree oil, or lavender to help calm the skin.
Wear Loose-Fitting Clothing
After bikini waxing, opt for loose-fitting clothing to allow the skin to breathe and minimize friction. Tight clothing can cause irritation and trap sweat, which may lead to ingrown hairs or further discomfort. Choose breathable fabrics like cotton or linen to encourage airflow and prevent irritation.
Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure
The waxed area may be more sensitive to sun exposure, especially in the first 24 to 48 hours. Avoid sunbathing, tanning beds, or prolonged sun exposure during this time. If you plan to be in the sun, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect the waxed area from harmful UV rays.
Say No to Sexual Activity
To prevent infection and further irritation, it's recommended to abstain from sexual activity, including intercourse, for at least 24 to 48 hours after your Brazilian wax. Friction and bodily fluids can disrupt the healing process and increase the risk of infection. It's generally best to give your skin time to recover before resuming sexual activity.
Prevent Ingrown Hairs
To minimize the chances of ingrown hairs, gently exfoliate the waxed area two to three times a week, starting 48 hours after your wax. Use a soft washcloth, gentle scrub, or exfoliating mitt and prevent hair follicles from becoming trapped beneath the skin. Infected ingrown hairs can be painful, if you suspect or see raised itchy bumps on the skin apply a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes daily, exfoliate with a gel / scrub or a salicylic acid. In most cases ingrown hairs heal themselves within one to two weeks.
If an infection is present after troubleshooting the above options let Signature Beauty know to advise a plan. Usually, a pharmacist can help by recommending an antibiotic cream.
Avoid Touching or Picking
Resist the urge to touch, scratch, or pick at the waxed area, as it can introduce bacteria and lead to infections or further irritation. Touching or picking at the waxed area can also disrupt the healing process and increase the risk of ingrown hairs. It's important to let the skin heal naturally and avoid any unnecessary manipulation.
Schedule Regular Maintenance
To maintain the smooth and hair-free results of your wax, it's generally recommended to schedule regular waxing sessions. The frequency may vary depending on your hair growth rate, but typically it's recommended to get a wax every four to six weeks. Consistent waxing can help weaken the hair follicles and result in finer regrowth over time.
Let’s start with the basics – what is a bikini wax? A bikini wax is a beauty treatment to remove hair from the pubic region. It can range from the traditional bikini shape, which involves tidying the pubic area to ensure no hair is visible outside of the knicker line, to a Hollywood wax which involves all pubic hair being removed.
There are four standard bikini wax styles:
What’s a standard bikini wax?
A perfectly shaped upside-down triangle of hair is left, with no hair escaping the knicker line at the top of the thigh.
What’s a high or extended bikini wax?
Like the standard bikini wax, the high or extended bikini wax removes more hair to leave a smaller and more defined triangle.
What’s a Brazilian wax?
A Brazilian is sometimes nicknamed ‘the landing strip’! It removes all of the pubic hair but leaves a small, neat strip at the front. This waxing involves removing the pubic hair between the legs and through into the buttocks area.
What’s a Hollywood wax?
The Hollywood wax involves complete removal of all the pubic hair, from the front, between the legs, and between the buttocks. It’s the complete hair removal solution.
Again, the answer to this does vary slightly. There’s no escaping that your first waxing experience may be accompanied by a smarting sting. However, your therapist will have methods and techniques to minimise the discomfort. Additionally, after the first time, it’s not as uncomfortable. Most clients report that it didn’t hurt as much as they anticipated it would.
A very common question for anyone getting an intimate wax done for the first time. It’s very normal to feel nervous but you honestly have nothing to feel embarrassed about. Remember, your therapist has done this countless times before. We are professionals and discrete and will aim to put you at ease.
First up, you’ll be asked to undress from the waist down, then discuss your preferred style. . Next, some oil or powder will be applied to protect the skin.
Hot wax with a wooden spatula will be applied to the area, removing it from the skin along with the hair. Occasionally a few odd hairs may be missed, and the technician will use tweezers to remove these.
Lastly, a soothing cream or oil may be applied to prevent any ingrown hairs, and to prevent irritation.
Like with a standard bikini wax, a Brazilian or Hollywood wax lasts around 4-6 weeks. For some people, the gap between waxes may be as frequent as every 3 weeks.
Usually, a Brazilian or Hollywood wax takes around 40 minutes from start to finish if its hot wax or less if its strip waxing.
All intimate waxing stings a little for a short while, improving with repeat treatments. Does a Hollywood wax hurt more than a bikini wax? The skin on the labia and between the legs is obviously more sensitive than the skin along the bikini line. As such, both a Hollywood and a Brazilian wax come with a little more discomfort. However, this really does get better over time and the benefits are certainly worth it.
